Large boxes create a simple problem on scales with integrated displays: you cannot see the screen. A carton overhangs the platform, covers the readout and forces the person packing the order to move the shipment just to check the number.

The tare function is useful too. If you place products inside a reusable bin while preparing orders, tare lets you zero out the container and measure only what is added afterward.

For shipping labels, however, always weigh the final packed parcel again. The carrier receives the product plus its carton, padding, tape, inserts and protective materials, so those components need to be included in the actual shipment weight.

This is particularly important for fragile Etsy products. A ceramic vase may not seem exceptionally heavy on its own, but bubble wrap, foam, double boxing and reinforcement can add a meaningful amount to the final package.

Using the bare product weight when buying postage is therefore a mistake. The completed package is what matters, and the scale should be one of the final stops before printing the shipping label.
